The Wreckage of What Used to be Time…

I’ve been away from the whole scene for a while & it’s kinda indefinite as to how much longer it’s gonna be. With Narsil on a never-ending hiatus & with me having pretty much “moved” out of Delhi & Acrid Semblance getting difficult over the distance, I figured it’s time to…move on?

Yeah so I’ve been fiddling around with recording & shit for the past few days. Got a bunch of songs that I’ve recorded & considering the scratch from where I had to start as far as recording/mixing/production goes, it was indeed gonna be a HUGE challenge for me.

Initially, I was trying to get a good sound on a VERY basic setup (Behringer UCG 102, Nuendo 3, AT/GR & Waves)…and was failing miserably, quite obviously. What sounded good on headphones (Behringer HPM1000) sounded like urine dripping on a corrugated aluminium sheet elsewhere!

Then all of a sudden, one fine night, my torrent started working (I still don’t know how) and I immediately downloaded Amplitube Metal. Pardon my usage of “big” words (me still being pretty much a n00b and all that), but I was still not satisfied with the sound I was getting out of AT-metal (though, the cab sim on AT-metal is FAR more superior than that on AT or Guitar Rig 2).

I remembered having stumbled on this a while back, and decided to get into the gritties of it (now that I have a much better amp sim than AT or GR). The cabinet impulses are indeed a boon to us lesser mortals who can’t get within the affordability ranges of good equipment.

So basically, long story cut short, here’s what I’ve been up to down under…

The stuff up there is my first “breakthrough” for a good sound & this is the furthest I’ve reached (considering my 2-day experience with impulses, heaps of crap mixes, equipment issues, academics) in that. I still don’t know goat squat about drum EQ & leads and all that…but I have to start somewhere…

Feedback, crits, love letters…all accepted in cash or kind…of cash :D

Cheers!

PodCast 2 – An Interview with Isobel Hodges

An interview with Isobel Hodges…her background as an Artist & her thoughts on Design.

Industrial Design, Portfolios & Contemplative Bludgeonings…

It’s that time of the semester, when you need to get yourself into 5th gear & make sure you finish everything on time. In my case, I’d better, as I have a flight to catch back home and I can’t afford to miss out on deadlines…

Since this blog, technically, falls under my coursework, this post serves as gearing up. I recently took part in Core77’s 1-Hour Design Challenge, where you had to sketch & render a car within an hour & post a time-lapsed video for the same. My entry can be found in the blog post below this one. The important thing, for me, is not winning – apart from the bragging rights, the prizes are not all that lucrative hehe! The important thing, however, is that Ralph Gilles, VP of Design at Chrysler is judging the competition, which means that my work is sure to get noticed by him! I’m actually really happy with that…though bragging rights could really boost my portfolio :P

Speaking of portfolios, I stumbled upon this while browsing the Core77 forums. This gives a simple DIY thingy on how to prepare those 1-page layouts for your online portfolio – mighty helpful I reckon…it’ll ease a lot of pressure off WordPresses & Blogspots and all!

Also worth a thought is the fact that the thin line between art & design is being traversed universally, and that the true meaning of design (or industrial design) is not something that a lot of people seem to understand. True, industrial designers need to build good-looking things & have an idea of tinkering and blah blah blah…but if a prospective employer asks you “as an industrial designer, how are you gonna benefit my company?”, what will your answer be? I’m dead sure you won’t be able to get away with eye-candies & bludgeonings on a sheet of metal…the answer has to be convincing!

We had a form course at NID last semester, and the understanding I got about design was very perceptive & psychological in nature. Form perception is a psychological phenomenon, and is universal – a good form is a good form period! A good form has a proper balance between amazing & amusing elements – basically the geometric & the organic, respectively. Any extra weight on either side will tend the user to just lose interest & make the “design” obsolete/unusable, albeit over a period of time. Also, humans, instinctively, like things closer to nature owing not only to form, but to function as well – and there you have biomimicry! I guess one of the roles of an industrial designer, thus, is to bridge this gap between humans & nature – basically get man closer to nature.

Through our past broadcasts (audio & video), a lot of my batchmates have tried to address this question by interviewing students, professionals, even people not studying industrial design…and with due respect to all those interviewed, I couldn’t find any convincing answer. Industrial design can not just be about sketching & making things look good – that just makes this whole field so puerile and takes away all the ethics involved. Or maybe it’s just me…

However, there were a few interesting video broadcasts relating to industrial design. One of them can be found here, where RMIT faculty & industrial designer Paul Angus answers a few questions posed by Jennifer Dengler. Another one is an interview with Janine Prescot, industrial designer at TE Designs, where she talks about the role of the industrial designer in the industry (interviewer: Sabrina Schaum).

A little away from interviews, Aran Kamonchan has explored light musically…this one is a must-listen!

What now…I plan to explore the line between art & design, and try to resolve it in my audio interview with Isobel Hodges. Isobel is known by all industrial design students (and a lot of the faculty members) at RMIT as the great friendly lady at the industrial design reception, and a few know that she is an artist herself. Having worked closely in both the fields, I believe she’ll give some good insights into the two…

As for the question regarding what industrial design actually is, I don’t think there lies a definitive answer…I’ll stick to answering the call of nature till then :)

1 Hour Design Challenge

A competition on core77 where you had to sketch/render a car within an hour. I posted this as my entry. It’s cool if I don’t win (the chances are slim…but chances ARE there!!!)…but the important thing is – it’s being judged by Ralph Gilles, the VP of design at Chrysler! So atleast my work will be seen by him :)

Sketch Session

A quick render…time-lapsed…

VodCast 1 – Ergonomics

A documentation of my ergonomics project from semester 2…this was aimed at understanding workspaces & how to tackle ergonomic issues by starting off with a simple non-motorized vehicle, having a rather non-conventional seating arrangement. This understanding can be applied to automobiles.

PodCast 1 – Textile Design

Here’s a short interview with my batchmates from NID, India, who are currently at RMIT studying Textile Design. In this interview, I tried to get a brief overview on what textile design is, how it is related/different to Industrial Design…and where is the future of textiles headed.

I tried to keep it short but it’s still a 12 second overshoot…

Video…

Fiddling more with audio & video…i know the edits/cuts aren’t the best in the world, and neither is the sound quality (blame that on compression) but this works well with flaunting my guitar playing :)

The Broadcast Project – Ideas for Broadcast(s)

I can’t get an idea of what I should be doing for my broadcasts…for those who don’t know what I’m talking about, click here. The rest, read on…

I had a few initial ideas but none of them are quite interesting.

I first thought of going down to the workshop & interview Paul over there. Paul’s a funny bloke, and that, coupled with a few workshop sounds, would’ve made a cool interview on workshop safety. But then I dropped that idea…don’t really know why.

Another idea was to create an audio narrative on the invention of the wheel…with cool stone-age sounds and caveman arghs! I’m still thinking whether to do this or go for something…simpler?

While I’m still contemplating on re-inventing the wheel, another idea popped in. I guess I could make an audio advertisement for Industrial Design. This would have examples of bad designs & how ‘industrial design overcomes that and makes the world a better place‘. This could involve proper conceptualization and storyboarding, and would also mean that I’ll have to work my ass off in the next week!!! More power to Industrial Design \m/

Then there are podcasts that we’re required to do for my studio…so that’s always there as an option.

Also, the list of people whom we can go & interview, as circulated by Ramesh Ayyar.

For the major vodcast, I guess I’ll take the tried-and-tested documenting my studio thingy. The zerocar is a mobility model for a ‘city’ that allows no personal car ownership. This will go through the entire process as followed by me, from the research to the final model.

I could also document my class presentation for the Melbourne History elective & put it across as a vodcast.

That’s pretty much it…can’t think of more…and can’t decide on one :(
